Climate change also has considerable impacts on agri-food production, with consequences that do not even exclude Italy, where significant changes have been found. Olive trees moving close to the Alps, early harvests and an increase in wine strength are just a few examples.

Climate crisis and Made in Italy products

Recent studies have found that well 98% of the planet is under attack from global warming, which is never that fast in 2,000 years. There is also a clear overheating trend in Italy. The ranking of the hottest whole years known by our Peninsula in the last two centuries is concentrated in the last period, including in the order 2018, 2015, 2014 and 2003.

As remarked by Coldiretti, this climatic trend affects the distribution of crops and their characteristics. The typically Mediterranean olive tree in Italy has now moved close to the Alps. In the meantime, banana, avocado and other exotic fruit plants have arrived in Sicily and Calabria, never seen before in our territory.

The rise in temperatures has also involved indigenous wine, which with the heat has increased by one degree over the last thirty years. In the wine sector there has also been a anticipation of the harvest, in some cases a month compared to the traditional September appointment.

The heating eventually causes the change in traditional environmental conditions for the aging of cured meats, for the refining of cheeses or for the aging of wines. A situation that, according to Coldiretti, puts the assets of typical products of Made in Italy, whose distinctive features and quality depend essentially or exclusively on the geographical environment.

To this already worrying context are added the damage caused to agriculture by the evident tendency to tropicalization. In the last few years, they have grown exponentially violent weather events, such as water bombs and hailstorms, as well as seasonal delays that undermine the health of crops and agri-food production. An emblematic case is that of honey, another excellence of Made in Italy.

The collapse of honey production

From North to South, along the entire boot, 2019 will be remembered as the year of the collapse of honey production due to the anomalous climate that characterized the first months of the year. The percentages of the decline are impressive: they range from 40% to over 70% in some areas.

In particular, higher-margin productions such as acacia decreased by 41% compared to expectations, leading to a cut in revenues of 73 million euros for beekeepers across the country.

The collapse of local honey has at the same time led to an increase in imports. According to an analysis carried out by Coldiretti on the basis of the data Ismea, currently on the shelves of shops and supermarkets more than one in two jars actually contains foreign honey. About half of this honey comes from Hungary. 10% instead comes from China where, unlike the national territory, they are also allowed GM crops.

To avoid bringing to the table products from abroad, which are often of low quality, "it is necessary to carefully check the origin on the label or to contact the producers directly on farms, farmhouses or in the Campagna Amica markets”Advises Coldiretti.

There suffering of bees and the consequent collapse of honey production are one of the many effects of climate change underway, which disrupt nature and which in the long term are threatening the economy itself. It is time to change course before taking the road of no return.
