How to bleed the radiators: instructions on how to do itpurgegodsradiators to fill the entire radiator circuit with water evenly.

Now autumn is approaching, before the temperatures drop suddenly it is advisable to do some maintenance work on the boiler in order to check that everything is in order. Standard maintenance work includes bleeding the radiators. A circuit full of air certainly cannot guarantee good efficiency.

The radiators, if not purged, can create problems for home heating, why? Generally it depends on the air that forms inside the radiators.

The presence of air bubbles in the radiator circuit does not allow homogeneous heating in the upper area of the radiator and in some cases, causes an annoying sound of water falling. Every autumn, before starting the boiler and activating the radiators, it is advisable to perform a purge. How to remove the air from radiators? Nothing simpler! Just act onvent valveas we will explain later.

Before you seehow to bleed the radiatorslet's answer some preliminary questions.

Is the bleeding of the radiators hot or cold?

Cold purging would be better. It is necessarybleed the radiatorswith the boiler off for an hour already. For bleed the radiatorsjust operate thevent valve.

Can radiators be vented without a vent valve?

If you are wondering how to bleed radiators without a vent valve, you are off track! Only very old models do not have a breather valve. If this is your case, see the last paragraph.

All radiators have a vent valve, usually located on the opposite side of the thermostatic valve.

If you don't have thekeyto open thevent valve, we advise you to buy it. A key costs a few euros and has universal measures. The vent valve, in fact, has a diameter of 5 mm.

If you really don't want to buy the key to open the vent valve, you could force your hand andremove the air from the radiatorsusing pliers, however, you risk damaging the valve itself and causing leaks. Is it really worth taking the risk? For a few euros ?!

If you don't know where to get onewrench for breather valve, you just need to go to a plumbing and heating shop or take advantage of the online purchase. On Amazon, a pair of keys to open and tightenthermostatic radiator valvesyou buy at a price of 3.64 euros and free shipping.

For all information, please refer to the product page:key for radiator valves.

The key shown is the standard one, made of steel. Generally, when installing the heaters, the installer leaves these keys with you ... however not everyone keeps them! If the installer is not clear, it happens that the landlord underestimates their usefulness and ends up losing them.

How to bleed the radiators, the procedure

Here is the procedure, step by step, for eliminate the air from the radiators. Begin at bleed the radiators starting from the one closest to the boiler.

Beside the radiator there is a small tap (the vent valve), open it with the appropriate key but only after placing a container underneath.

When the valve opens, you will hear the air coming out. Wait until the water arrives, first with a few droplets and then with a fluid flow. Close when the water flows without air interruptions.

How to fill the radiators with water and bring the system to pressure

Warning!
Anyone living in a condominium with central heating must skip this procedure.

After removing theair from radiators, go to the boiler room, the time has come to fill water the radiator circuit again and bring to pressure the system.

On the front panel of the boiler, there is the pressure gauge that indicates the system pressure. The pressure gauge is circular in shape and vaguely reminiscent of the car's tachometer. The pressure gauge has an arrow that will indicate the pressure of the water placed inside the radiator circuit. The pressure gauge indicates a minimum level and a maximum pressure level, the pointer, ideally, must be in the range between the maximum (in red) and the minimum (in black).

The arrow, to indicate a good pressure, must be placed between number one and number two of the pressure gauge. If this is not the case, carefully open the boiler water supply tap which is usually placed under the boiler itself.

Check that the pressure gauge needle rises until it stabilizes, making sure that the pressure does not exceed 2.5 BAR, usually delimited by a red band.

Bleed the central heating radiators

For vent the radiators of a central heating systemyou must act as described above but then you will not have to fill the water circuit.

The heating is centralized, in fact, it does not require extra operations. The condominium boiler refills with water automatically, otherwise it will be necessary to contact the condominium administrator who will call the boiler technician.

Radiators without vent valve

If your radiator does not have the appropriate vent valve, you need to find an alternative cap, usually placed on the right or in any case in the upper part of the radiator.

Alternatively, you can go to a specialized dealer to buy a valve that is the same but with a breather so as to replace it and provide easier ventilation in the following autumns.
